According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the daily numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases are increasing. For this reason, Wilmington University has made the difficult decision to cancel its 2020-2021 winter athletics season. The teams affected include volleyball, men's and women's basketball, bowling and cheerleading. However, the NCAA has announced that winter sports athletes will not lose a year of eligibility.
We value the energy and passion our student-athletes bring to the University. We are committed to providing them with the resources they need to succeed, but every student's health and safety must come first.
We had hoped that the pandemic's severity would have decreased, making it possible to return to a winter sports schedule. But now is the time for the athletics community to come together to support one another, stay connected, and remain strong until we can meet again.
No decision has been made at this time regarding spring athletics.
