Another week into the spring season and another pair of Wilmington University student-athletes were named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Players of the Week, while women’s lacrosse added another CACC Rookie of the Week as well, as announced on Monday by the conference office.
For the fifth week in a row, a Wilmington baseball player was named the CACC Player of the Week as senior second baseman Josh Swirchak earned the honor this week. Women’s lacrosse has a pair on the Weekly report, as senior midfielder Rebekah McCurry was named a Co-Player of the Week while freshman midfielder La’Dae Boykin earned Rookie of the Week for the second time this year.
Swirchak (Manassas, Va.) led the Wildcats to another perfect 4-0 week last week, extending the team’s winning streak to 10 straight. He batted 8-for-15 in the four games, hitting two doubles and a triple. He went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, three RBI, and two runs scored in game one against Bloomfield. He collected two hits each in the sweep over Dominican, collecting two RBI in game two against Dominican.
McCurry (St. Leonard, Md.) has been mentioned on the Weekly Honor Roll in multiple reports this year, but finally cracked into the Player of the Year, earning Co-Player of the Week status after leading the Wildcats to a 2-1 week. Both wins came against CACC opposition as the Wildcats defeated Dominican and Nyack last week.
The senior midfielder scored eight goals and added 12 assists on the week for a team high 20 points. She set another single-game record for the Wildcats, scooping up nine ground balls at Dominican. She scored a week’s high four goals at St. Thomas Aquinas before tallying seven more points at Dominican. She scored four times against the Chargers, adding three assists before finishing the week with a goal and five assists against Nyack. McCurry added 16 ground balls, 20 draw controls, and 13 caused turnovers on the week.
Boykin (Edgewood, Md.) earns her second CACC Rookie of the Week honor in a matter of three weeks after helping the women’s lacrosse team to a 2-1 week. She led the Wildcats with five goals and an assist over Nyack on Saturday, scooping up three ground balls while controlling four draws as well. She scored once and dished out four assists in a win at Dominican, finishing the week with six goals and five assists for 11 points.
Softball’s senior pitcher Chelsea Botsch was mention on the weekly Honor Roll as well, leading the Wildcats to a 4-0 week. She pitched a pair of complete game shutouts over Felician and Georgian Court, striking out a career best 15 batters against the Lions.
