BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - - The game ended in a 2-2 draw, but No. 2 Bridgeport was able to survive and advance to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship, defeating the No. 3 Wilmington University men's soccer team, 4-2, in penalty kicks on Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field.
The loss in PK's drops the Wildcats out of the CACC Tournament, but they are still alive for an at-large berth into the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Tournament with an 11-3-5 overall record. Bridgeport moves on to face No. 1 seed Post on Saturday in the Championship.
The Wildcats struck first on Wednesday, after Jacques Mason was taken down in the box by the keeper sliding out. Theo Faillon converted the chance from the spot, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Bridgeport was able to tie the game in the 18th minute, using a big switch of fields to open space. Soren Larue got into the box on the right side and beat Emil Lollike to make it 1-1. The game went into the halftime break with the same, 1-1, score.
The Purple Knights struck early in the second half as well, using a touch pass down the middle to allow Joao Miranda to run into the box and slide one under Lollike for the 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats responded quickly, as Shuntaro Morimoto found the back of the net less than two minutes later. Theo Faillon played Michiharu Takanashi into the left corner and he played a low cross back across the box. The ball skipped past Isaac Simic but landed right to Morimoto who blasted home his fifth of the year to the keeper's left in the 50th minute.
Wilmington kept the pressure on in the second half, but Viktor Masek came up with four saves after the game was tied, including one on the doorstep from Takanashi in the 56th minute. The Wildcats outshot the Purple Knights, 10-5, in the second half, but the game remained tied, 2-2, at the end of regulation.
Emil Lollike made two stops in the first overtime while the Wildcats two shots and four corners in the second overtime, but to no avail.
Theo Faillon hit the Wildcats' first PK to tie the score, 1-1, but then Bridgeport converted and Masek made a save to lead, 2-1, after the second round. Emil Lollike converted from the spot to make it 3-2 after three rounds and then made a stop on Bridgeport's fourth attempt to try and swing the momentum. But Masek made another stop on the Wildcats and then Bridgeport's Josh Erdos ended it by converting, 4-2.
Emil Lollike made nine saves in the match for the Wildcats, including five in the first half and two in the first overall.
The Wildcats have to wait until the NCAA Selection show to see if they earned a spot into the NCAA Division II Super Region I Tournament. The Selection Show is set for Monday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
