Wilmington Baseball’s Josh Swirchak Signs Free Agent Contract with the St. Louis Cardinals Organization

NEWARK, Del. - - A Wilmington University baseball senior received the greatest phone call of his baseball career last week, as the St. Louis Cardinals called Josh Swirchak following the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft to sign a free agent contract.

Swirchak (Manassas, Va.) was a senior second baseball on the Wildcats (37-15) that was the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions, the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament Champions, and participants in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships.

The righty was second on the team with a .383 batting average in 2015, hitting 12 doubles with four triples, and two home runs. He scored the third most runs (53) on the team while also bringing in the third most runs (39) in 45 games this year. He finished the season with a .531 slugging percentage and got on base in 47.1 percent of his plate appearances.

Swirchak headed to Florida over the weekend to sign his contract and will head Tennessee to compete with the Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian League at the Rookie level.

The Johnson City Cardinals play their home games at Howard Johnson Field in Johnson City, Tennessee, which is in the northeast corner of the state. The season starts at the Kingsport Mets on June 23.
