BOCA RATON, Fla. - - Brad Scull threw eight scoreless innings as the No. 19 Wilmington University baseball team stopped a four-game skid with an 8-0 win over Queens (N.Y.) on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Lynn University.
Brad Scull (Aston, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) struck out 11 batters without issuing a walk in eight innings of work. He only allowed five hits before turning it over to Justin Mears to close out the win with a scoreless ninth.
The offense didn't get rolling until the third inning, taking advantage of a two-out error to score a run. Frank Nigro singled through the left side, plating Eddie Nevins after a two-out error kept the inning alive.
Scull left a runner on in the fourth and shut the Knights (3-3-1) down in order in the fifth to allow the offense to break the game wide open in the top of the sixth.
Dan Hyatt added another extra base hit to his line, this time blasting a two-run home run to right field to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead and start a six-run sixth.
With two outs and runners on first and third, a double steal brought home the second run before Eddie Nevins singled in Kendall Small for the 6-0 lead. Luke Johnson then capitalized in his at bat, launching a two-run homer to left center to give the Wildcats the 8-0 lead.
Scull continued to throw through the sixth and seventh innings, and then struck out the final two batters of the eighth before being lifted.
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, playing against NAIA foe Florida National on the campus of St. Thomas in Miami Gardens, Florida.
