PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University baseball team stretched its winning streak to eight straight with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division sweep of Holy Family on Thursday, needing extras to win game one, 11-7, before taking the nightcap, 14-2, at FDR Park.
GAME 1:
The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, but the Wildcats found an answer in the 11th, scoring four runs to take the opener.
The Wildcats took a 7-2 lead with a two-run sixth inning and a three-run seventh inning. Josearmando Diaz gave the Wildcats the lead with an RBI single in the top of the sixth and then Cam Trego hit a two-out infield single to score Diaz for the 4-2 lead.
Tyler Pirrung hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh before Mason DeLuca reached on a fielder's choice, as both Pirrung and Chase Fleming scored.
The Tigers fought back though, scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to cut it to 7-4. Dom Marotta then got the first two out in the bottom of the ninth, but the Tigers sparked a rally, hitting a two-run double followed by an RBI single to tie the game, 7-7.
After a scoreless 10th, a walk and an error started a rally for the Wildcats in the 11th. Chase Fleming then singled to the pitcher, scoring Shawn Edevane with the go-ahead run. Now with two outs, CJ Nocella hit a two-run triple to right and then scored on a passed ball, opening the margin, 11-7. John Klepacki then set the Tigers down in order in the bottom half to for the game one win.
Tyler Pirrung went 3-for-5 with three RBI while Brandon Grygo went 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Chase Fleming, Josearmando Diaz, and Cam Trego all added two hits. John Klepacki pitched a scoreless 10th and 11th innings to move to 3-0 on the year.
GAME 2:
The Wildcats started early in the nightcap, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in their first three at-bats. The Wildcats collected 16 hits in the nightcap.
With two outs and the bases empty in the top of the first, the Wildcats rallied to score two runs. Josearmando Diaz singled in Tyler Pirrung and then a first and third play scored another run. Brandon Grygo started the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI single and then Tyler Pirrung forced in a run by being hit by a pitch. Chase Fleming hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0. Cam Trego tripled to start the third and Shawn Edevane brought him in with a single for the quick 6-0 lead.
Holy Family scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to close the gap to 6-2, but then the Wildcats extended the lead with three runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh to win going away.
Tyler Pirrung hit an RBI triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Shawn Edevane added a sacrifice fly later in the sixth. Tyler Pirrung added another RBI in the seventh while Diaz walked in a run and AJ Tropiano was hit by a pitch to bring in a run. D'Angelo Ponce capped the scoring with a two-run single, making it 14-2.
Garrett Quinn went the first 2.1 innings before Scot Borgmann went 3.2 innings with six strikeouts to earn the win. Zach Frame pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the victory.
Chase Fleming went 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored while Tyler Pirrung went 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI, and three runs scored. Brandon Grygo went 2-for-5 while Diaz, Edevane, and Ponce all contributed two RBI each.
