NEWARK, Del. - - One start into his career and Wilmington University baseball freshman Brody Gebhard is making a splash at the regional level, being named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday.
The baseball team got underway over the weekend with four games at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Wildcats went 3-1 over the weekend and had an exceptional debut from Brody Gebhard (Lancaster, Pa.) in game two against Franklin Pierce on Friday night. Gebhard started the nightcap against Franklin Pierce and pitched a perfect five innings against the Ravens. He struck out nine batters in those five innings, including five straight at one point. He earned the win in a 4-2 victory and was named the CACC Pitcher and Rookie of the Week.
Felician's Rocko Brezniak was named the East Region Hitter of the Week as well, representing the CACC in both categories.
Arkansas-Monticello's Eli Marvin was named the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week from the Central Region while Saginaw Valley State's Jack Sequin, a fellow freshman, was named the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week. Sequin threw a 7-inning no-hitter in his second career start.
Gebhard and the Wildcats are back in action this weekend when they travel to Cary, North Carolina to play four games. They start with Pitt-Johnstown on Friday morning.
