CARY, N.C. - - A three-run bottom of the sixth turned the game around for the Wilmington University baseball team, coming back to defeat Pitt-Johnstown, 5-4, on Friday at the USA Baseball Complex.
Scott Borgmann came on in relief to get the final out of the sixth inning and then pitched the final three frame of scoreless baseball, picking up his first win of the season. After the Mountain Cats (5-4) took the lead in the top of the sixth, the Wildcats (4-1) answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.
Each time the Mountain Cats scored, the Wildcats came right back.
Pitt Johnstown scored two runs on a pair of two-out hits in in the top of the third, the Wildcats answered in the home half. Brandon Grygo and Tyler Pirrung singled with one out. Brayden Hostetter followed with a walk to load the bases. Now with two outs, Brian Klumpp singled into left, chasing two runners home to tie the game, 2-2.
Xavier Cortez settled back in on the mound, going 1-2-3 in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Mountain Cats scored again with two outs in the sixth though, getting a two-run double which ended Cortez' afternoon. But the offense had the starters' back once again.
A one out walk to Garrett Quinn loaded the bases in the home half. The Wildcats got one run back on an error and then Tyler Pirrung launched a ball off the wall in right, giving the Wildcats the lead, 5-4. The Wildcats couldn't get any more to cross though, leaving the bases loaded.
Borgmann took over from there, going 1-2-3 in the seventh, leaving a walk on base in the eighth, and leaving a one-out single on first in the ninth to close out the game.
Tyler Pirrung and Brian Klumpp led with two RBI each while Brandon Grygo, Pirrung, and Justin Hernandez each had two hits.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday morning at the USA Baseball Complex, taking on West Chester in a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is set for 10:00 a.m.
