CARY, N.C. - - Cam Trego took the second pitch he saw in the bottom of the ninth inning and deposited it over the wall in right, walking off the 4-3 victory for the Wilmington University baseball team over Point Park, concluding its trip to the USA Baseball Complex.
The victory ended another 3-1 weekend for the Wildcats, moving their overall record to 6-2 on the young season. They look to carry the momentum to the Sunshine State as they will play five games in Florida next week.
Point Park jumped on the Wildcats early on Sunday, scoring two unearned runs off starter John Grybowski on two hits. The offense left two on in the second and had two on in the third before an inning-ending double play.
The Wildcats were able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Cam Trego striking early. Chase Fleming started the inning with a single and Trego followed with an RBI double. Justin Hernandez tied the game, 2-2, with an RBI groundout.
The Wildcats took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a run on two hits. Brandon Grygo started the inning with a single and then it was first and third after a bunt single from Brayden Hostetter. Jordan Santiago hit a sacrifice fly, deep enough to allow Grygo to trot home for the 3-2 lead.
Grybowski went six innings with seven strikeouts before turning it over to his bullpen. Brandon Grygo pitched a scoreless seventh, but the Pioneers was able to score on a two-out double in the eight to tie the game.
The Pioneers had a runner on second with one out in the top of the ninth, but Charlie Porter and Garrett Quinn got out of the jam unscathed.
That allowed Cam Trego to step in to start the bottom of the ninth, hitting his first homer of the year for the 4-3 victory.
Trego batted 2-for-4 with a double and a homer, two RBI, and two runs scored. Brandon Grygo was the only other Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Wilmington's trip to Florida starts with a game against Sioux Falls on Wednesday morning in Winter Haven, Fla. The first pitch is set for 10:00 a.m.
