NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University baseball team clinched the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season series over Bridgeport with a 12-4 victory in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Following the CACC split on Saturday on the road, the Wildcats (11-7, 3-2 CACC) came home and knocked out 14 more hits, scoring in six of their eight at-bats to win the three-game series.
Bridgeport struck first in the top of the first, but the Wildcats had a quick answer. Chase Fleming singled home Brandon Grygo in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Cam Trego then tripled in the second inning, coming home on a Ryan Kiendle RBI groundout for the lead.
Chase Fleming tripled in two runners in the bottom of the third and then the Wildcats scored three runs following an error with two outs and the bases empty in the fourth. Brand Grygo singled in a run before a double steal captured another run for the Wildcats. Tyler Pirrung then doubled down the right field line to make it 7-1.
The bottom of the fifth inning was the first time the Wildcats didn't score at least one run in an at-bat in 12 innings, dating back to the ninth inning of game one yesterday.
The Purple Knights (5-7, 1-2 CACC) tagged starter Xavier Cortez for two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 7-3, but he was efficient in his work, lasting 6.0 full innings to earn the win.
The Wildcats added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Justin Hernandez and an RBI double from Brandon Grygo.
Bridgeport got one back in the seventh and then threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with one out, putting the tying run on deck. Scott Borgmann came on and induced an infield fly and then struck out a pinch hitter, leaving the bases loaded.
Tyler Pirrung and Chase Fleming added RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth, putting the game away. Borgmann earned his first save of the season after leaving a two-out walk on first base in the ninth.
Chase Fleming went 3-for-5 with a triple and five RBI while Brandon Grygo finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Cam Trego was a homer shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Tyler Pirrung went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI while Justin Hernandez went 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, and three runs scored.
