Baseball Takes Rubber Match, 7-1, to Win CACC Series Over Chestnut Hill

NORTH WALES, Pa. - - The Wilmington University baseball team won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season series against Chestnut Hill with a 7-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Hostelley Field in the rubber match.

Chase Fleming and Scott Borgmann combined to throw seven scoreless innings on Wednesday. The Wildcats (12-7, 4-2 CACC) scored two in the third and three more in the sixth to put away the Griffins (6-8, 3-3 CACC).

Jordan Santiago opened the scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the second and then the Wildcats made it 3-0 in the third. The top of the order struck early, getting back-to-back doubles from Brandon Grygo and Tyler Pirrung for a 2-0 lead. Cam Trego restarted the inning with a single and eventually scored on another wild pitch, making it 3-0.

Zach Frame hit a two-run triple in the top of the sixth and then scored on a Justin Hernandez sacrifice fly, giving the Wildcats a 6-0 lead.

The Griffins put two on in the bottom of the sixth, chasing Fleming from the game. Scott Borgmann came on and picked up a strikeout to escape the jam unscathed.

Cam Trego added an RBI double in the top of the seventh, giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.

The Griffins put two on in the bottom of the seventh again, but a line drive double play allowed Borgmann to get out of the jam again. Fleming went 5.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts while Borgmann went 1.1 innings with a punchout.

The Griffins scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, but John Grybowski stranded the bases loaded to keep it a 7-1 game. Stephen Katch then allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth but picked up a strikeout to end the game.

Tyler Pirrung went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Cam Trego went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Zach Frame led with two RBI while Grygo had a double as well. Chase Fleming is now 2-1 on the season.

The Wildcats remain in the CACC with a weekend series against Caldwell. They host the Cougars in a doubleheader on Saturday at Wilson Field. The first pitch of game one is set for 12:00 p.m.
