10-Run Fourth Inning Allows Baseball To Sweep CACC Series From Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. - - A 10-run fourth inning powered the Wilmington University baseball team to a three-game sweep of Caldwell, winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference series with a 14-4 victory in game three on Sunday at the Kiwanis Oval.

The Wildcats (15-7, 7-2 CACC) were already leading 4-0 when they scored 10 in the top of the fourth. The Wildcats have now won six in a row and are 7-2 since returning from Florida.

Wilmington got on the board in the top of the second inning, loading the bases with no outs. Garrett Quinn hit into a fielder's choice to score the first run and then Brandon Grygo hit an RBI single to center to make it 2-0. Tyler Pirrung then hit a sacrifice fly, making it a 3-0 lead. D'Angelo Ponce hit an RBI single through the left side in the top of the third, giving the Wildcats a 4-0 lead. The visitors then pulled away in the top of the fourth.

Tyler Pirrung started a one-out rally with a triple and then Jordan Santiago started the scoring with a two-run single. Cam Trego followed with an RBI triple and D'Angelo Ponce added another RBI with a single. Ryan Kiendle hit an RBI single before Garrett Quinn hit another RBI triple in the inning for the Wildcats. Garrett Quinn scored on an error and then Tyler Pirrung hit his second triple of the inning, bringing in another run. Chase Fleming added an RBI single before D'Angelo Ponce capped the scoring with another RBI single in the frame, giving the Wildcats a 14-0 lead.

Starter Brody Gebhard went five innings, allowing two runs in the bottom of the fifth. HE struck out six while only allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. Dylan Potero pitched a scoreless sixth inning with two punchouts. Caldwell scored two in the bottom of the seventh, but Zack Czarnecki recorded the final out, ending the game in the seventh inning, 14-4.

D'Angelo Ponce went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI while Brandon Grygo batted 3-for-4 with an RBI. Tyler Pirrung went 2-for-2 with two doubles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly, knocking in two. For the series, Pirrung batted 9-for-10 with five RBI and six runs scored. Jordan Santiago went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

The Wildcats step outside the CACC for their next contest, playing at Kutztown on Tuesday afternoon. The single game is set for 3:00 p.m. in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.
