KUTZTOWN, Pa. - - The Wilmington University baseball team had its six-game winning streak snapped with a 19-5 loss to Kutztown on Tuesday afternoon at the North Campus Field.
Kutztown (8-10) scored 16 runs in their final three at-bats, ending the game in the seventh inning. The Wildcats (15-8) tied the game, 3-3, with a three-run top of the third, but then the Golden Bears scored in bunches from the fourth inning on.
The Golden Bears scored three in the bottom of the second, but the Wildcats answered with a three-run top of the third. Justin Hernandez started the inning with an infield single and then Brandon Grygo followed with another single. Cam Trego then brought both runners in with a triple and then Chase Fleming added a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 3-3.
Kutztown then scored seven runs on just one hit in the bottom of the fourth, using four walks, two hit-by-pitches, two wild pitches, and an error to get the job done.
The Wildcats put two on with two outs in the top of the fifth but couldn't scratch a run across. The Golden Bears then scored six more in the home half, using four hits and two walks in the inning to take a 16-3 lead.
The Wildcats picked two up in the top of the sixth with no outs in the inning, but couldn't get any more across the board, only closing the gap to 16-5. Kutztown tacked on three more in the bottom of the sixth, but the Wildcats left two on in the top of the seventh, bringing an end to the game.
Justin Hernandez was the only Wildcat with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cam Trego hit a triple, going 1-for-4 while Chase Fleming had the other RBI.
Charlie Porter started on the hill and went 1.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Steven Mann was saddled with the loss after going two innings and allowing three unearned runs.
The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play for the rest of the week, starting with two games at Holy Family on Wednesday. The games will be played at the Maplezone Sports Institute (MSI) in Aston, Pennsylvania. The first pitch of game one is set for 11:30 a.m.
