NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Garrett Quinn worked a walk to bring in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Wilmington University baseball team won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference series over Felician, 10-9, on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Wildcats (19-9, 11-3 CACC) trailed 9-8 going into the bottom of the ninth but the home team mounted a rally with two runs on three hits, an intentional walk to load the bases, and a walk-off walk.
Felician (17-11, 9-5 CACC) got off to a fast start on Sunday, scoring three runs in the top of the first and three more in the top of the third.
Trailing 6-2, the Wildcats rallied with a five-run bottom of the fourth. Brett Walmsley walked and D'Angelo Ponce reached on an error. Cam Trego then took the first pitch he saw down the right field line, sneaking it inside the foul pole for a three-run homer. Garrett Quinn and Brandon Grygo restarted the inning with hits and then Tyler Pirrung tied the game, 6-6, with an RBI single. The Wildcats took the lead on a Chase Fleming RBI groundout, 7-6, but the lead came at a cost. Brandon Grygo left the game after getting injured while stealing third.
Felician quickly tied the game in the top of the fifth and then took the lead once again with a two-run double in the top of the sixth, 9-7.
D'Angelo Ponce stole third and scored as the ball got past the third baseman in the bottom of the seventh, but the tying run was left at second in the inning.
Daviel Fernandez pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, leaving a one out double at second. Ryan Kiendle then tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth inning to give the Wildcats a chance.
With one out, Brett Walmsley started the rally with a liner into center. D'Angelo Ponce then singled into right center, putting runners on first and third. Cam Trego tied the game with a chopper back to the mound, moving the winning run to third base. The Golden Falcons intentionally walked Justin Hernandez to load the bases with one out. Garrett Quinn then worked a full count and watched ball four go by, bringing in the winning run, 10-9.
Cam Trego went 3-for-5 with a homer, four RBI and a run scored. Brandon Grygo finished 3-for-3 with a double while Brett Walmsley and D'Angelo Ponce each had two hits. Steven Mann, Dylan Potero, Daviel Fernandez, and Ryan Kiendle all had scoreless outings in relief.
The Wildcats are home again for their next contest, as they finish off the CACC series with Holy Family on Tuesday afternoon. The first pitch at Wilson Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
