NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Cam Trego hit for the cycle in leading the Wilmington University baseball team to a 16-11 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Holy Family on Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The win completed a three-game CACC sweep of the Tigers, as the Wildcats are now 20-9 overall and tied atop the CACC standings with a 12-3 record.
Cam Trego (Coatesville, Pa.) batted 4-for-5, hitting a leadoff triple in the seventh inning to complete the Wildcats' first cycle in its NCAA era. He homered to lead off the first inning, doubled in the third, and singled in the fourth as well.
Not to be outdone, Tyler Pirrung (Newark, Del.) went 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts on Tuesday and now stands atop the program leaderboard with 71 career stolen bases. He took over the top spot from Christian Adorno, who stole 70 bags from 2014-18. He is a perfect 23-for-23 this year in stolen base attempts.
On Tuesday, the Wildcats used an eight-run fourth inning to turn around a 4-3 deficit. Brett Walmsley hit a one-out solo homer to start the rally. Cam Trego blooped one into left to load the bases with one out, and then Tyler Pirrung chopped one over the head of the first baseman for a two-run single. Pirrung and Trego executed a double steal for a run and then Walmsley walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run. Zach Frame capped the inning with a two-run double to left center, giving the Wildcats an 11-4 lead.
The Tigers wouldn't go ahead, though, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth. But the Wildcats had an answer every time the Tigers tried to come back. MJ Phillips and D'Angelo Ponce had RBI singles in the fifth to give the Wildcats a 13-6 lead.
The Tigers scored three in the top of the seventh, but the Wildcats answered right back with a three-run bottom half. Brayden Hostetter had an RBI groundout before Ponce hit a sacrifice fly in foul ground in right. Walmsley then added an RBI single to make it 16-9.
Holy Family tacked on two runs in the top of the eighth, but Ryan Kiendle came on and recorded the final two outs of the eighth, leaving two runners on, and then worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to close out the contest.
Cam Trego tied the game in the bottom of the first with a leadoff blast, his seventh of the year. He hit a two-run double in the third, getting thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. His single came in the fourth and then he grounded out back to the pitcher in the fifth. He got another chance in the seventh, leading off the inning with a triple off the fence in right center. He finished 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Zach Frame went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI while Brett Walmsley went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. Chase Fleming improves to 4-1 after throwing five innings with four strikeouts.
The Wildcats now turn their attention to Jefferson, playing a doubleheader on Thursday and a single game on Saturday. Thursday's doubleheader is set to be played in Philadelphia with the first pitch coming at 12:00 p.m.
