Millersville Scores Six in Eighth Inning to Overcome Baseball, 9-5, in Final Nonconference Game

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - - Millersville scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back and defeat the Wilmington University baseball team, 9-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Cooper Park.

The Wildcats (29-14) held leads of 3-0, 4-1, and 5-3, but the Marauders (27-13) scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth, capped by a go-ahead grand slam, to win the game late.

Wilmington jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. D'Angelo Ponce started the game with a single and then Tyler Pirrung singled through the right side and Ponce raced around the bases as the ball got past the right fielder. Chase Fleming added an RBI ground out and then Stephen Katch hit a two-out RBI single to plate Brian Klumpp.

Stephen Katch, who played his high school career about 10 miles away at Hempfield, gave the Wildcats a 4-1 lead with a leadoff homer in the top of the fourth inning.

Millersville got to within 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but then the Wildcats added a run with an infield single by Garrett Quinn in the top of the sixth, 5-3.

The bottom of the eighth started with a walk and two singles to load the bases. Millersville first scored on an RBI groundout and then came back with an RBI single to tie the game, 5-5. Now with two outs, Jimmy Kirk hit a grand slam for the Marauders, taking a 9-5 lead. The Wildcats went down in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.

Stephen Katch was a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Pirrung and Brian Klumpp each went 2-for-4 with Pirrung picking up another stolen base.

Brody Gebhard, who also attended Hempfield High School, went the first four innings, striking out five while allowing three runs.

The Wildcats have two CACC series remaining in the regular season, starting with a battle for first place against Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday afternoon. The doubleheader is scheduled to be played at Wilson Field with the first pitch at 12:00 p.m.
