PETERSBURG, Va. - - In one of their final tune-ups prior to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship, the Wilmington University golf team had another good showing in a tough tournament, finishing 10th overall at The Griffin Invitational hosted by Saint Leo with rounds of 300-298-299 for an 897 (+33).
Catawba shot a 287 on Tuesday to surpass Palm Beach Atlantic for the overall title, finishing with an 856 (-8) while PBA finished with an 860 (-4).
Freshman Keegan Snyder led the Wildcats on Tuesday, shooting a 72 (E) in the final round. He moved up eight spots into 78th overall, posting rounds of 82-84-72 for a 238 (+22). On Tuesday, he started on the par 3 12th hole, starting strong with five straight pars. He birdied the 17th, 18th, and 2nd holes to get as low as three-under par. A tough stretch brought him to one-over, but he birdied his final hole of the day, the par five 11th to get to even par.
Noah Wallace had the best tournament for the Wildcats, finishing in a tie for seventh place with rounds of 73-68-74 for a 215 (-1). On Tuesday, Wallace had a birdie on the par five second hole to get back to even par. He posted 14 pars, a birdie, and three bogeys in his final round.
Josh Freeman moved up 16 spots with a 74 (+2) on Tuesday, finishing in 47th with rounds of 78-75-74 for a 227 (+11). Starting on the 11th hole, he hit a birdie on the par four 13th to get back to even and then a birdie on the first hole followed by an eagle on the par five second to get to two-under par. He finished his day with an eagle, two birdies, nine pars and six bogeys. Freeman tied for the tournament lead on par three scoring, going one-under for the tournament.
Will Finnerty closed out the scoring for the Wildcats on Tuesday, shooting a 79 (+7), finishing in 60th place. He had rounds of 76-76-79 for a 231 (+15) for the tournament. He had back-to-back birdies on Tuesday to get back to three-over par after the third hole, his 12th hole of the day.
Sebastian Ramos closed out the team on the course on Tuesday, shooting an 82 (+10) to finish in a tie for 70th overall. He had rounds of 73-79-82 for a 234 (+18) this week. He totaled nine birdies in his three rounds this week, including two on Tuesday.
Rounding out the Wildcats on the course on Tuesday was James DeRocini, playing as an individual. He moved up nine spots on the leaderboard with a 75 (+3) on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 70th overall. He improved each round this week, going for an 81-78-75 for a 234 (+18). He had three birdies in the final round on Tuesday.
Catawba's Paul Esnault moved up three spots to the top of the leaderboard with a 70 (-2) on Tuesday. He won the tournament on the first playoff hole for medalist honors.
The Wildcats continue farther south for their next tournament, as they will participate in the 15th Annual Jay Jennison Cup in St. Augustine, Florida. Hosted by Flagler College, the Jay Jennison Cup will take place at The Palencia Club starting on Monday, September 29. s
