NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - A strong start to the season has the Wilmington University men's lacrosse team sweeping the opening Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Players of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Reigning CACC Player of the Year Andrew Dzubak paced the offense to a 2-0 record, earning CACC Player of the Week. Freshman Ian Betts was second in scoring, picking up the CACC Rookie of the Week in his first week of action. Connor Widmer led the team in ground balls and face-offs, earning CACC Defensive Player of the Week, and Daniel Flynn was the final backstop for the 2-0 week, picking up the CACC Goalkeeper of the Week.
Andrew Dzubak (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats on the attack, scoring eight goals and adding three assists for 11 points in two victories. He scored three goals and added three assists in the season-opening win over American International. He then scored a game-high five goals in the team's home debut, a victory over Barton.
Ian Betts (Camden, Del.) was second on the team with five goals and seven points last week, making his collegiate debut. He scored two goals and added an assist in his collegiate debut against American International and then made his home debut with three goals and an assist in the win over Barton.
Connor Widmer (Warwick, R.I.) led the team with 15 ground balls coming off the face-off. He gave the ball back to the offense over 70 percent of the time following a goal, helping the team to two victories. He went 26-for-37 in the two games form the face-off spot. He went 16-for-23 (69.6%) on face-offs at American International, adding 10 ground balls. He then went 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the spot in the win over Barton, adding five ground balls.
Daniel Flynn (New York, N.Y.) played all 120 minutes in goal, allowing 14 goals and making 20 saves in the two wins. He was also second on the team with seven ground balls last week. He made seven saves while only allowing eight goals in the win at AIC and then made 13 saves with only allowing six goals in the win over Barton. He had a 58.8 save percentage for the week.
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting nationally ranked Mercy at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. against the Mavericks.
