NEWARK, Del. - - A furious second half comeback by the Wilmington University men's soccer team was thwarted by a late goal as No. 14 Felician escaped the WU Athletics Complex with a 3-2 victory on Saturday for Homecoming.
Felician (5-2, 1-1 CACC) jumped out front with a pair of early goals against the Wildcats (1-6-1, 1-2 CACC), but the Wildcats roared back in the second half, eventually tying the game in the 82nd minute. But Felician answered with the game-winning goal in the 86th minute for their first win against the Wildcats since 2011.
The Golden Falcons scored on their first shot of the game, building up the field from a goal-kick and scoring just 1:33 into the contest. They made it a 2-0 game in the 13th minute, as a rebound off the post popped right to Tim Jaeger for his second goal of the year just 12:17 into the contest.
Felician outshot the Wildcats, 11-5, in the first half and took their 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
Out of the break, the game switched ends and the Wildcats became the aggressors. They finally struck in the 64th minute, going down the middle of the field. Alex Tarway played Diego Ramirez up the middle. Ramirez touched the ball to Michiharu Takanashi into the box and he one-timed it home to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Ramirez and Takanashi each had opportunities moments later, but both their shots were saved. Tsubasa Abe's shot sailed high as well in the same sequence as Wilmington was vying for the tying goal.
The Wildcats were able to in the 82nd minute off a short corner. Lenny Greifenberg played a ball into the crowded box. Demario McCarthy redirected the pass and Jhamaleek Porter was able to get on the end of it inside the six-yard box. He tapped it home for the 2-2 score 81:11 into the match.
Diego Ramirez had a chance from in close less than a minute later, but he was denied on the doorstep. Michiharu Takanashi hit the post in the 85th minute, with a rebound opportunity hitting a body and going just wide of the post.
The Golden Falcons took the ensuing goal-kick and marched down the field, scoring with 4:51 to play.
The Wildcats outshot the Golden Falcons, 19-13, for the match, including 14-2 in the second half. They also earned more corners, 7-1, in the match.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday as they head to Philadelphia to take on Holy Family. They will start the CACC doubleheader with a 4:30 p.m. kickoff on Tiger Field.
