PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Second half goals just five minutes apart was all the scoring in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tie between the Wilmington University men's soccer team and Jefferson, 1-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Ravenhill Field.
It is the second tie in conference play for the Wildcats, as they are now 5-1-3 overall and 1-1-2 in CACC play. Jefferson moves to 3-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in CACC play.
In the first half, the teams tied in shots, 8-8, but only one of them was on frame for each team. Will Kiers made a save in the 38th minute and then the Rams' JR Sexton made a stop on a header from Javier Pena in the waning seconds of the first half.
The Wildcats put on the pressure to start the second half as Mylan Le Baut had a shot on goal and then Patrick Keys had a header off a corner cleared off the line in the 51st minute. Theo Faillon had a header saved in the 53rd minute and then Isaak Simic had a volley saved on the back post a minute later.
The Wildcats finally broke through in the 60th minute, capitalizing on a misclearing by the Rams. The ball popped up into the air on the edge of the box and Theo Faillon jumped on it. He fed it back across the box to the far post and Michiharu Takanashi one-timed it in for the 1-0 lead.
But the Rams battled right back, hitting the right post and then scoring on a free kick. Mohamed Elhendawy beat Kiers to the ball on the set piece, heading it past everyone to tie the game, 1-1 in the 65th minute.
The Wildcats nearly regained the lead moments later, but the curling shot from Shuntaro Morimoto was saved by a sprawling Ram goalkeeper. Theo Faillon had one final chance in the final two minutes, getting on the end of a through ball on the right side. But he overshot his attempt to the far post, sliding it out over the end line.
The Wildcats led in shots, 16-12, including shots on goal, 7-2. Jefferson took more corners in the game, 8-5. Will Kiers made one save in his first collegiate career start.
The Wildcats step outside the CACC for their next contest next week, after having this weekend off. They travel to Mercy next Wednesday with the opening kick scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
