WATERBURY, Conn. - - Each team had chances late, but a physical battle between the 23rd ranked Wilmington University men's soccer team and the 13th ranked Post Eagles finished in a 1-1 draw in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup on Saturday at LaMoy Field.
With the tie, the Wildcats move to 6-1-4 overall and 1-1-3 in CACC play. The tie keeps the Eagles unbeaten, now sitting atop the CACC with a 3-0-2 conference record and a 4-0-5 overall mark.
The Wildcats outpaced the Eagles in shots on Saturday, leading 23-10 overall and 10-3 in shots on goal. But they were only able to find the back of the net once, despite chances for another that fell just short.
The Wildcats recorded the first four shots of the game, with the fourth beating the goalkeeper in the 16th minute. Mylan Le Baut stole the ball at midfield and took it towards the 18-yard box. He passed it out wide to the left to Michiharu Takanashi and he quickly sent it back across the box to the far post. Shuntaro Morimoto was there and went diving for a header, scoring 15:37 into the match.
The Eagles didn't get their first shot until the 30th minute and their first shot on goal until the 32nd minute. Takanashi had a shot go wide in the 37th minute and then Jhamaleek Porter had a shot saved in the 43rd minute, but the Wildcats went into the halftime break leading 1-0.
Theo Faillon nearly made it 2-0 in the 57th minute, getting a great ball into the box from Jacques Mason. Faillon had a chance in alone with the keeper, but he couldn't chip it over the sliding keeper who saved it out of bounds for a corner.
But the Eagles responded right back, getting a corner in the 61st minute. A reentry went to the near post, and Eagle Pedro Vercosa beat everyone to the ball, heading it home to tie the game, 1-1.
Each team put the pressure on late, with each keeper coming up with saves. First it was Emil Lollike who came up with the big stop in the 86th minute. On a free kick, the Eagles' Sami Charaf Amal bent a ball around the wall to the near post, but Lollike sprawled to his right to make the stop. The Eagles followed with a rebound but couldn't hit the frame again.
Faillon had another golden opportunity in the 87th minute, but his shot was saved by Leopold Dufaut diving to his left. Faillon gave one final chance in the waning seconds, as he was fouled outside the box trying to weave through traffic. His attempt with 6 seconds beat the wall and was heading for goal, but Dufaut sprawled to his right and made the save at the post to keep the game, 1-1.
Dufaut made nine saves for the Eagles while Emil Lollike made two stops for the Wildcats. Jacques Mason led the Wildcats with six shots while Faillon had five and Morimoto with four.
The Wildcats return home for their next game, as they host Georgian Court on Wednesday at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening kick is set for 3:30 p.m.
