RUTHERFORD, N.J. - - A penalty kick with 1:10 remaining propels the Wilmington University men's soccer team to a much needed 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Felician on Sunday afternoon at Tryon Field.
With the win, the Wildcats catapult up to fourth place in the CACC standings, moving to 8-2-4 overall and 3-2-3 in the CACC for 12 points with two conference games to play.
The Wildcats first got on the board in the 36th minute using a sneaky play from Jiung Ha to set up the shot. Jiung Ha dummied a pass from Theo Faillon, getting around his defender and catching up to the ball on the left side of the box. He then played it back to Ludvig Danielsson and he beat the keeper to the near side for his first collegiate career goal.
Felician was able to tie the game in the second half, scoring off a corner in the 69th minute. A header on the far post brought the ball back to the near post, and a second header found the back of the net for the 1-1 tie.
Now up against the clock, the Wildcats were pressing forward late. Alex Tarway got a touch around a defender at the top of the box, but then was tripped and the referee award a penalty kick with 1:10 to play. Theo Faillon stepped up and calmly converted his third chance from the spot this year for his CACC leading 11th goal of the year.
Felician outshot the Wildcats, 11-9, including shots on goal, 6-4, and corners taken, 7-3. Emil Lollike made five saves for the Wildcats in the win.
The Wildcats have three games remaining, all in the state of Delaware. They start with a home game on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Chestnut Hill at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening whistle is set for 3:30 p.m.
