SAINT LEO, Fla. - - The Wilmington University softball team wrapped up its trip to Florida with a pair of losses to Saint Leo, 8-0 and 9-1, in a pair of five-inning games on Friday night at Mary Cannon Cabot Field.
GAME 1:
The Lions' (17-8) Tierney Hocquard threw a three-hit shutout in the opener, striking out four while only allowing the three hits and two walks.
The pitcher was aided by a four-run bottom of the first inning, using only one hit. The Lions scored on a hit by pitch, a fielder's choice, a walk, and another fielder's choice to take an early 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats left two runners on in the top of the first, but then didn't have another base runner until the top of the fourth. An error with two outs in the bottom of the fifth allowed the final two runs to come home for the Lions, ending the game, 8-0.
Tristyn Stewart, Maddie Vollmar, and Bella Barnes all had hits for the Wildcats.
GAME 2:
A five-run bottom of the second inning allowed the Lions to jump out to a large lead in the nightcap. They scored a single run in the first, five in the second, one in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to end it early, 9-1.
The Lions scored five runs on four hits in the second, loading the bases with no outs. A walked started the scoring before a two-run single, a first and third play, and a final RBI double put the Lions up 5-0.
The Wildcats got on the board in the top of the fourth, as Haley Grygo started a two-out rally with a double. She would eventually score on a passed ball in the inning. But the Lions answered with a run in the fourth and then walked it off with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth.
Five Wildcats all had hits in the game, with Grygo's being the only extra base hit.
