Wildcats Close Out Regular Season Home Slate with 10-1 and 3-1 Wins over Chestnut Hill

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University softball team took a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from Chestnut Hill, 10-0 and 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon in the final regular season games at Asbury Field.

GAME 1:
A six-run fourth inning pushed the Wildcats to a 10-0 lead as they went on to take the opening game of the doubleheader.

The Wildcats scored a run in the bottom of the first, three in the second, and six in the fourth to put the mercy rule into effect. Kylee Gunkel tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout, striking out two batters to improve to 12-6 on the year.

Haley Grygo started the first with a triple and then Sydney Hatch brought her home with an RBI single. The Wildcats scored three runs in the second with two outs, starting with a two-run RBI single up the middle from Tristyn Stewart. Haley Grygo then singled Stewart home with an RBI single to center. For the 4-0 lead.

Cassidy Zelano stole home in the fourth inning, sneaking a hand on the corner of the plate ahead of the tag. Alexa Eisemann put down a squeeze bunt in the inning and then Delani Sheehan singled through the left side for another RBI. Gracie Mabry capped the scoring with an RBI single through the right side, pushing the Wildcats' lead out to 10-0.

Chestnut Hill started the fifth with a single but then Gunkel closed out the game to complete the shutout.

Haley Grygo and Cassidy Zelano led the offense with two hits each while Stewart had two RBI in the win.

GAME 2:
Chestnut Hill jumped out to a lead with a run in the fourth inning and it wasn't until the fifth inning that the Wildcats got rolling. Delani Sheehan struck out nine batters while allowing a run on seven hits and a walk, improving to 10-7 on the year.

The Wildcats left a runner on in each of the first three innings but couldn't cross the plate. The Griffins led off the fourth with a single and then an RBI triple to left gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Cassidy Zelano started the fifth with a single and then a single from Kylie Saienni pout runner son first and third. Tristyn Stewart singled into left to tie the game, 1-1. Haley Grygo hit a sacrifice fly for the lead and then Bella Barnes add an insurance run with an RBI single.

Delani Sheehan left a runner on third in the sixth and then left the tying run on first to end the game, picking up her ninth and final strikeout to close out the contest.

Kylie Saienni went 2-for-2 with a double. Tristyn Stewart, Haley Grygo, and Bella Barnes all led the Wildcats with an RBI.

The Wildcats close out the regular season with a doubleheader at Felician on April 22. The first game of the regular season finale is set for a 2:30 p.m. start.
