NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - The Wilmington University softball team went 5-1 last week, leading to a pair of student-athletes being named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Players of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Sophomore pitcher Olivia Hitchens (Dagsboro, Delaware) was named the CACC Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 while freshman Addison Sabo was named a CACC Co-Rookie of the Week after collecting nine base hits.
Olivia Hitchens went 3-0 in the circle, striking out 17 batters in 18.2 innings pitched. She only allowed five hits and two walks in her three appearances. She tossed a complete game in a 5-4 win over Adelphi, striking out five Panthers without issuing a walk. She then threw a six-inning complete game shutout against Dominican, striking out eight without allowing a walk and only three hits in a 10-0 win. She then finished the week with 5.2 innings against Molloy, picking up the win in a 6-4 victory. She struck out four while only allowing two earned runs on five hits.
Addison Sabo batted 9-for-20 last week with two doubles, four RBI, and six runs scored. She had a slash line of .450/.476/.550 for a 1.026 OPS. She also went 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts last week. She had a week's best three hits in game two against Dominican, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. She also had two hits with a double in game one against the Chargers and two more hits in game one against Molloy. She is batting .355 on the season.
Baseball's Brandon Grygo had 11 hits in six games last week to land on the Weekly Honor Roll. Men's Lacrosse's Connor Widmer went 11-for-12 from the face off spot to earn himself a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll as well. Softball's Maddie Vollmar had seven RBI last week to earn an Honor Roll spot while women's lacrosse's Kirra Crowley led the team with nine points in two games to also earn a spot on the sport's Weekly Honor Roll.
Hitchens and Sabo lead the softball team into two doubleheaders this week, first heading across town to take on Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday afternoon. The first pitch of game one is set for 12:00 p.m.
