NEWARK, Del. - - Following a historical 13-year stint as the Wilmington University head softball coach, Mike Shehorn has announced his resignation from the position to pursue other coaching opportunities.
Mike Shehorn, a resident of Magnolia, Delaware, has accepted the head coach position at NCAA Division I Delaware State University in Dover.
Shehorn, who has won more than 400 games with the Wildcats, brought the program to new heights, starting with his first season at the helm in 2014. He's coached the Wildcats to their six Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championships, nine NCAA Division II East Region Tournament appearances, four NCAA Division II Super Regional Appearances, and two NCAA Division II East Super Regional Championships in 2023 and 2024.
The all-time program wins leader with 411, Shehorn also led the team to the University's first ever team victory in an NCAA National Tournament, defeating Augustana (S.D.), 5-2, at the 2024 NCAA DII Softball Championships, in Longwood, Florida. They defeated Adelphi in Garden City, N.Y., in game three of the best of three series in 2023 to advance to the program's first ever NCAA Division II Softball Championships and then swept Adelphi at home in 2024 to again advance to the final stage.
Shehorn wraps up his 13-year tenure with a 411-244 overall record for a .627-win percentage. He's guided teams to 30 or more wins in nine seasons, including a record 46 wins in 2024 and 44 wins in 2023. The 2014 CACC Tournament Championship was the program's first, coming in his first year at the helm. He also led teams to the 2016, 2019, 2023, 2024, and 2025 CACC Tournament Championships.
A successor for the Wildcats' program will be named following a national search for the position.
