NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University track and field teams divided and conquered over the week, splitting the squad to compete in the Trojan Relays at the University of Mount Olive and the Bill Butler Invitational hosted by West Chester University.
TJ Taiwo made the biggest splash of the weekend, setting a new school record in the 100-meter hurdles while at the Trojan Relays. He ran his prelim heat in 14.63 seconds, qualifying first but backed out of the finals heat. Taiwo broke the mark of 14.99 set by Bradley Spencer in 2023.
Bradley Spencer ended up placing second overall in the 100-meter hurdles, running the finals heat in 15.58 seconds. TJ Taiwo then ran the 400-meter hurdles event to a second-place finish, finishing in 56.10 seconds overall. He was the first collegiate finisher though, behind only a runner from the NC State University Club Track team at 54.39 seconds.
A couple Wildcats competed in new events over the weekend, with Rob Powell finishing 21st overall in the discus with a distance of 36.02 meter. Christian Dollard threw the javelin for the first time, finishing in 11th overall with a distance of 28.74 meters.
Temi Mustapha finished 14th in the 100-meter race and 11th in the long jump while Eliza Hildreth finished 17th overall in both the 100 and 200-meter events. Camila Cornejo set a new personal record with the 800-meter race while Trinity Fortune-Medine set a new personal record in the discus. Sytieia Brown finished 4th in the shot put event with a distance of 12.36 meters.
In West Chester, the mid-distance and distance runners competed at the Bill Butler Invitational.
Joe Volk finished 4th overall in the 5000-meter event with a time of 17:10.11 while Dan Wyshinski finished sixth overall in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:08.81. He also ran the 800-meter race, placing 10th overall with a time of 2:05.73. Zach Souders was right behind him in 12th place with a time of 2:06.53.
Amy Chomo competed in her first 800-meter event of the season, placing fourth overall with a time of 2:26.68. Tiffany Banning ran the 1500-meter event in 5:06.14, placing fourth overall to lead the women's teams as well.
The Wildcats remain close to home with their next meet, competing at the Lincoln East Invite on Thursday afternoon. The meet, hosted by Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the LU Athletics Stadium.
