Track and Field Competes at Widener Schuylkill Showcase at Ott Center

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University track and field team competed at the Widener Schuylkill Showdown over the weekend, battling inside the Ott Center in Philadelphia, hosted by Widener University.

TJ Taiwo and Rob Powell led the Wildcats over the weekend by each placing third in their event. In total, the Wildcats placed six individuals inside the Top 5 at the Widener Schuylkill Showdown,

TJ Taiwo finished third overall in the 60-meter hurdles, running in a time of 8.48 seconds. He was .04 seconds off the pace for second while Eastern's Ian Hopkins won the heat with a time of 8.27 seconds.

Rob Powell finished third overall in the long jump, jumping a day's best 6.94 meters. He also had a jump of 6.92 meters on the day, allowing him to break a tie with Holy Family's Desi Stroud for third. His distance of 694 meters is now 91st for the NCAA DII indoor season. Stockton's Ahmad Fogg won it with a meet record 7.17 meters, followed by Shippensburg's Jackson Sotosky's 7.01 meters.

Julian Jones had a pair of fifth-place finishes in mid-distance events on Sunday. He ran the mile in 4:18.57 and was the third NCAA DII runner in the Top 5. Shippensburg's Tommy Crum won the event with a meet record 4:07.69. He then competed in the 5K, placing fifth overall with a time of 15:06.14. The top eight in the meet broke the previous meet and Ott Center record, with TCNJ's Brandon Chen officially setting the new mark at 14:52.82.

Irvin Marable III placed fifth overall in the 800-meter event, crossing the line in 1:58.16. He was the second NCAA DII student-athlete in the Top 5, as Shippensburg's Chase Hensinger won the event with a new meet record of 1:52.87.

Samir Barber was the final Wildcat inside the Top 10 on the weekend, placing ninth overall in the triple jump. His third jump was the best of the day, leaping a distance of 13.04 meters. Widener's Matayo McGraw won the event with a distance of 15.13 meters.

The women had a pair of Top 15 finishes on Sunday, with Makeda Lynch placing 13th overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.91 and finishing 14th overall in the long jump with a distance of 4.72 meters.

The Wildcats' indoor campaign concludes next weekend when they travel back to Ursinus College to take part in the Frank Colden Invitational inside the Lewis Bakes Center Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 7.
