Simmons Named CACC Women's Basketball Player of the Year

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington University is pleased to announce that Amelia Simmons (Concord HS/Wilmington, DE) has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Player of the Year.

Simmons, a senior forward, led the Lady Wildcats in just about every offensive category this past season, including points per game (22.1), rebounds per game (9.7), field goal percentage (46.5%), three-point field goal percentage (49.4%), free throw percentage (81.9%), and blocked shots (22).

She also led the CACC in scoring and three-point field goal percentage, was third in rebounding, fourth in field goal percentage, fifth in free throw percentage, second in defensive rebounds per game, and fifth in offensive boards per game.

Not only did Amelia rank among conference leaders in most statistical categories, she ranked among national leaders as well.  Simmons is fifth in the NCAA Division II in scoring, 18th in rebounding, 53rd in field goal percentage, and 65th in free throw percentage.

She will close out her career as the most decorated player in program history, as she currently has 2,256 career points and 1,060 rebounds.  This past season, she hit the 2,000 point and 1,000 rebound plateau, and broke the school's career scoring record held by Jenny Asbury.  Her career points are the most by any player, male or female, in Wildcat basketball history.  This is the third consecutive season she has earned first-team All-CACC accolades, and the fourth year Amelia has been awarded All-Conference honors.

Simmons helped led the Lady Wildcats to a 12-7 mark in the CACC and an overall record of 15-12.  Wilmington finished the regular season as the fourth seed in the Southern Division, and will travel to take on the top-seeded Tigers of Holy Family University in the first round of the conference playoffs tonight at 7:00 PM.
