NEWARK, Del. - - The Felician women's basketball team raced out to an early first half lead in defeating the Wilmington University women's basketball team, 86-58, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference cross-divisional action at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Falcons (6-12, 4-7 CACC) raced out an eight-point lead after one quarter of play and took a 44-26 lead into the halftime break against the Wildcats (6-14, 3-9 CACC). The Wildcats closed the gap to as few as 13 points in the third quarter, but the Golden Falcons finished the quarter on a 14-6 spurt to reopen a 21-point lead after three quarters of play.
Jadyn Whitsitt scored the first five points of the game for the Wildcats and Nyree Grant put the Wildcats up 7-2 in the early going. Whitsitt put in another layup to tie the game at 12, but that is when the Golden Falcons took off. They went on a 9-0 to take a 21-12 lead, en route to a 11-3 run to end the first quarter and take a 23-15 advantage into the second quarter.
Mikala Casimir and Emma Matthews scored the first two buckets of the second quarter to get within 23-19, but the Wildcats got stuck on 21 points for over three minutes of game time. The Golden Falcons rattled off eight straight points to take a 34-21 lead and scored the final eight points of the quarter to lead 44-26 at the halftime break.
Grant was the only Wildcat to reach double digits in scoring, securing her third straight and sixth double-double of the season. She finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, adding three steals in the loss. Casimir put in nine points to go with six rebounds and two assists while Matthews finished with eight points, six rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocked shots. Lisa Eller came off the bench to score seven points for the Wildcats.
Four of the Golden Falcon starters scored double digits, led by Kameron Stone's double-double of 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting and 14 rebounds. She went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats round out the month of January with a CACC South Division bout on the road on Tuesday night. They head to CACC South Division leading and nationally ranked No. 13 USciences with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
