NEWARK, Del. – The Wilmington University women's basketball team fell in their final nonconference matchup of the season against Lincoln University, 100-65, Monday afternoon at the Complex.
The Lions (6-8) got out to a 13-4 run in the opening minutes of the contest, extending their 10-point lead into the second quarter, 23-13.
The Wildcats (1-10) could not catch up to the Lions, as Lincoln continued to extend their 10-point lead with 2:39 left in the first half. Lincoln closed out the first half with a 16-point lead, 45-29.
The Lions came out in the second-half with the same momentum to extend their lead even further to 65-34 with just 5:15 left in the third. The first three buckets of the quarter for the Lions were all three-pointers, starting the frame of on a 9-0 run. Kwanza Murray scored 12 of her 17 points in the third quarter for the Lions.
The Lions gained their largest lead of the game at 35 points when they hit the 100 mark with just 24 seconds left to play in the game on a free throw.
The Wildcats were led by senior Nyree Grant who scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Grant shot 6-of-7 from the floor for the game and added a perfect 8-for-8 from the foule line for her 20 points. Macy Robinson was one rebound away from a double-double as she scored 17 points and totaled nine rebounds. Jonna Maddox came off the bench to score eight points, while grabbing five rebounds.
Today's game was just the third time in program history that an opponent scored 100 points or more on the Wildcats, the most recent time coming last December to Chestnut Hill, 102-67.
The Wildcats start the New Year off on the road on Wednesday in a double-header with the men when they head to Lakewood, New Jersey, to face Georgian Court. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
