PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The full court press of Jefferson frustrated the Wilmington University women's basketball team on Wednesday night, as the Rams defeated the Wildcats, 74-43, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action inside the Gallagher Center.
The press and the Rams' (5-2, 1-1 CACC) defense forced the Wildcats (0-7, 0-2 CACC) into 30 turnovers on the night, resulting in 29 points at the other end for the Rams. The Wildcats started strong in the game, jumped out to a 6-2 lead, before the Rams used a 14-0 run to turn the tide for the contest.
Emma Brown started the second quarter with a bucket and then TyKeisha Hill hit a free throw to bring the visitors to within five points, 16-11. Tianna Neal had a steal and a layup to again bring it to within five points, 18-13, but then the Rams ran off an 8-0 run to reopen a 13-point lead. The Rams took a 29-15 lead into the halftime break.
The Wildcats' best stretch came in the third quarter, where they posted 17 points—their highest-scoring period of the night. They used a game best 7-0 run late in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 47-29, but the Rams finished the quarter on a 7-2 run. Armani Bell-Jackson scored seven of her team high 10 points in the third quarter.
Sparkle Leigh had five straight points early in the fourth quarter to bring the deficit to 19-points, but then the Rams scored and never let the lead slit below 20 again in the game.
Sophomore guard Emma Brown provided a spark with eight points, five rebounds, and three blocks, helping set an energetic tone at both ends of the floor. Ty'Keisha Hill anchored the interior with eight rebounds and five points, while Reynah Rattliff contributed six boards and four points. Sparkle Leigh had five points with three steals while Tianna Neal added two points and two steals.
The Wildcats return home for their next contest, hosting Felician on Saturday for another CACC battle. The women start the doubleheader at the WU Athletics Complex with a 1:00 p.m. opening tip.
