Bridgeport Uses Long Range Shooting to Defeat Women’s Basketball

NEWARK, Del. - - Bridgeport hit 12 three-pointers on its way to a 74-47 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Wilmington University women's basketball team on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.

The 12 three-pointers are the second most allowed in a game this season by the Wildcats. The Wildcats came into the game leading the CACC in only allowing their opponents to shoot 24.5 percent from beyond the three-point line. Bridgeport shot 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) for the game from deep.

The Purple Knights hit back-to-back three-pointers to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 16-4, in the first quarter. Emma Brown hit consecutive buckets to spark a 10-2 run to end the quarter. Armani Bell-Jackson hit a jumper before Emma Brown added another field gold. Bell-Jackson then had a steal and a layup at the buzzer, cutting the Wildcats' deficit to 18-14 at the end of the opening frame.

The game remained 18-14 until Bridgeport opened the scoring in the second with a three-pointer with 6:54 to play. They hit two more three-pointers, taking a 27-14 lead. A bucket from LeAnna Masseus and a free throw from Sparkle Leigh had the deficit to within 10, but the Purple Knights kept scoring, taking a 33-20 lead into the halftime break.

Reynah Rattliff put in a layup and Emma Brown hit a three-pointer, bringing the Wildcats to within 37-27. Bridgeport answered right back though, scoring five straight and then took their largest lead of the game, 47-29, with a three-pointer, with 3:14 on the clock. The lead remained at 18, 52-34, after the third quarter.

Bridgeport hit another three-pointer to start the fourth quarter, using a 10-3 run out of the game to grab a 62-37 lead with 7:37 to play and never look back.

Emma Brown led the Wildcats with 14 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor, adding six rebounds. Armani Bell-Jackson came off the bench to score 11 points. TyKeisha Hill added seven points and four rebounds while Reynah Rattliff led with four assists, adding five points and six rebounds.

The Wildcats remain home for their next contest, hosting Jefferson on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex. The women start the CACC doubleheader with a 6:00 p.m. tip.
