Stingy Defense Keeps Women’s Lacrosse Undefeated With 16-6 Win Over Roberts Wesleyan

NEWARK, Del. - - A stout defensive effort on Wednesday has the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team at 9-0 on the season, defeating Roberts Wesleyan, 16-6, at the WU Athletics Complex in the team's final nonconference game of the year.

Despite being outshot, 24-23, the Wildcats, anchored by sophomore goalkeepers Ashleigh Lawry and Allison Schiavone, only allowed three goals in each half. Lawry made eight stops in the first half before Schiavone came on and recorded four stops in the second half.

The Wildcats scored on 16 of their 23 shots, putting 21 shots on goal. They used a 6-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to turn a 4-3 lead into a 10-3 lead.

The teams traded goals throughout the first quarter, with the Wildcats getting the last say on the advantage to take a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. The teams continued to trade goals into the second, as Roberts Wesleyan scored to make it 4-3 with 13:24 to play.

Kirra Crowley scored on the advantage with 1:11 to play, and then got the ball back off the draw and scored right before the half again, taking a 6-3 lead into the break.

The third quarter was all Wilmington, as the Wildcats scored the first four goals of the second half to take command. Tristan Holdsworth scored twice in the run while Crowley and Leah Rycroft also scored for the 10-3 lead with 4:12 showing on the clock. The Redhawks scored to end the streak, but Alea Javorowsky scored from a tough angle and Tristan Holdsworth added another, giving the Wildcats a 12-4 lead after three quarters.

Roberts Wesleyan scored to start the fourth, but they wouldn't get any closer than seven goals, as they Wildcats scored back-to-back goals after each Redhawk goal.

Kirra Crowley paced the offense with five goals and an assist, adding five draws, and two caused turnovers. Alea Javorowsky had a goal and five assists while both Anastasia Giannoulis and Ella Royer added two goals and two assists each. Royer chipped in with five draws as well. Lea Rycroft and Tristan Holdsworth finished with three goals as well.

The Wildcats will compete inside the CACC the rest of the way, starting with three-time defending CACC Tournament Champion Dominican on Saturday. The opening draw at the WU Athletics Complex is set for 11:00 a.m.
