WATERBURY, Conn. - - The Wilmington University women's soccer team had to settle for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference draw on Saturday, playing to a 1-1 final score against Post University on LaMoy Field.
The draw puts Wilmington at 6-1-4 on the year overall and 3-0-3 in conference play, while Post moves to 0-3-2 in the CACC with a 0-8-2 record overall.
The first 45 minutes were quiet from a scoring standpoint, as Wilmington took 12 shots to Post's four but couldn't convert any of them into goals. The Wildcats put three on goal back-to-back-to-back in the 41st minute, but all three were saved by the Eagle goalkeeper.
After a scoreless first half, Post got on the board first in the 64th minute by taking a ball down the right side, playing a cross into the middle of the box past the reach of a diving Bella Mazzone, then tapping it into an open net for the goal.
The Wildcats responded just three minutes later in the 67th minute off the foot of Indigo Kirk. Cayley Winters was fouled about ten yards off the top right corner of the box, setting up a free kick that she sent to the far side of the box. The ball was loose for a moment, bouncing between the feet of both teams, before Kirk got an opening and took a shot from the top of the box that tipped off the keeper's hands and in.
Wilmington put three more shots on goal the rest of the game, but all three were saved. The Wildcats had an opportunity to take the lead on their final shot with two minutes left as Evelyn Payne got around the keeper at the top of the box, but her shot trickled just barely wide right around the open net.
Corners were 5-1 in favor of Wilmington, as were the shots at 28-8 (13-5 on goal).
Bella Mazzone saved four of the five shots she faced in her second consecutive start.
Next up is a home contest against CACC foe Georgian Court on Tuesday, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.
