WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team inched closer to a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament first round bye on Friday, defeating Post, 7-0, at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
Friday started a weekend full of CACC action for the Wildcats (5-4, 5-1 CACC), as they play at Holy Family on Saturday at finish the regular season at Chestnut Hill on Sunday. They won all nine matches on Friday over the Eagles (9-5, 2-3 CACC), earning the point in doubles with all three matches before sweeping the six singles matches.
Begona Gomar and Anushka Sathe improved to 5-1 together in doubles in CACC play, starting the Wildcats off with a win at No. 2, 6-2. They are 7-4 overall on the season. Tess Paya and Marie Rondot improved to 4-1 in CACC play at No. 3 doubles, winning the match, 6-4, to give the Wildcats the doubles point. The pair is 5-3 overall in doubles matches together. Laura Gil and Andrea Rilbalta made it a clean sweep in the doubles events with a 6-4 victory at No. 1, improving to 4-2 in CACC play on the year.
Tess Paya started the singles matches off with a Wilmington victory at No. 5, 6-0 and 6-0, keeping her clean singles sheet in CACC play at 5-0. She is now 8-2 in singles matches on the season. Andrea Ribalta took care of her opponent, 6-0 and 6-1, at No. 6 singles to also improve to 5-0 in CACC play, sitting at 6-3 overall on the season.
Begona Gomar improved her CACC record at No. 1 singles to 5-1 with a 6-4 and 6-0 victory, and now stands at 5-4 in singles competition on the season. Her victory closed out the team victory, giving the Wildcats their fourth point of the match.
Laura Gil won at No. 4 singles, 6-2 and 6-2, to improve to 5-1 in the CACC. She is now 8-5 overall in singles matches. Freshman Marie Rondot improved to 2-1 at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, and is now 3-2 in CACC play. Anuska Sathe finished off a Wildcat sweep with a comeback, falling in the opening set, 6-3, before fighting back to take the match, 6-2 and 10-3 in the superset. Sathe is now 5-1 in CACC and 5-5 on the season.
The Wildcats' match at Holy Family on Saturday is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. in Philadelphia.
