WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team remains in first place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a 6-0 victory over Dominican on Wednesday at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
The shorthanded Chargers (2-8, 0-7 CACC) only suited five student-athletes, giving the Wildcats the edge in doubles competition. Now only needing one of the remaining two matches to win, the Wildcats quickly took care of that, getting a win from Kushi Khandoji and Siana MacDonald, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles to claim the point. Ming-Fu Chen and Inés Oliveira made it a clean sweep with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles as well.
Neither team produced a player at No. 6 singles, shortening the match to just a total of six points on the double default.
Inés Oliveira started singles play with a 6-1 and 6-1 sweep at No. 5 singles before Siana MacDonald made gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with a 6-1 and 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Ming-Fu Chen clinched the match with a 6-2 and 6-2 win at No. 2 singles and then Gloria Barcaro kept the shutout intact with a 6-0 and 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
Dominican's Lia Sarjveladze forced a third set at No. 3 singles, but Kushi Khandoji was able to stay perfect in singles play this season with a third set super set victory, 6-0, 5-7, and 1-0 (10-7).
The Wildcats have clinched a spot in the CACC Tournament with two matches remaining in the regular season. They host Jefferson on Saturday at the Delcastle Tennis Center with the first serve set for 2:00 p.m.
