PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - For the third time in the last four years, the Wilmington University women's tennis team goes undefeated in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular season play, defeating Chestnut Hill, 6-1, on Tuesday in the finale at the CHC Tennis Courts.
Since returning to play following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wildcats have been 35-1 in CACC regular season play over the last four falls. Since the one loss last year to Jeffers, the Wildcats have rattled off 15 consecutive CACC regular season wins, 17 straight including last year's CACC postseason run.
On Tuesday, the Wildcats raced out to the early lead, winning the final doubles match to take the point. Kushi Khandoji and Siana MacDonald started with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles, but then the Griffins forced the point to the final match. Trailing 3-2, Gloria Barcaro and Molly Carlberg won the final four games to win, 6-3, and take the doubles point.
Siana MacDonald remained in a groove on the singles court, winning her fourth consecutive match to start the scoring at No. 2 singles, 6-1 and 6-3. Ming-Fu Chen gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with a 6-3 and 6-2 win at No. 4 and then Kushi Khandoji clinched the match with a win at No. 5 singles, 6-1 and 6-2, moving to 10-0 in singles competition this Fall.
Ines Oliveira extended the lead out to 5-0 with sweep at No. 6 singles, 6-1 and 7-6 (7-5). Chestnut Hill got its lone point from No. 1 singles, but then Liza Sylka completed the match with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 4-6, and 1-0 (10-4). It was Sylka's seventh straight singles victory to end the regular season.
The Wildcats (10-0, 10-0 CACC) will be the No. 1 seed and host the CACC Tournament this weekend. They will play No. 4 Jefferson in the first semifinal on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The Griffins (10-4, 6-3 CACC) will be the No. 3 seed and play No. 2 Goldey-Beacom in the second semifinal at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
