WEST HAVEN, Conn. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team picked up another important regional win, defeating nationally ranked No. 25 and previously unbeaten New Haven, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.
In a battle of nationally ranked teams, No. 26 Wilmington (16-4) gave No. 25 New Haven (13-1) their first loss of the season. The Chargers won the NE10 Tournament Championship while the Wildcats won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament and both will be in the upcoming NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament.
The Wildcats started doubles play with a 6-2 win at No. 3, as Ines Oliveira and Gloria Barcaro defeated Laura Ortner and Leni Bischof. The Chargers took No. 2 doubles, 6-3, to tie the series, 1-1, but then Molly Carlberg and Ming-Fu Chen finished their match at No. 1 with a 6-4 victory to take the point.
Four of the singles matches went to a third set. The Chargers tied the match with a straight set win at No. 4, but then Ming-Fu Chen put the Wildcats back on top with a 7-5 and 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
Kushi Khandoji came from behind to win at No. 6 singles, dropping the first set, 6-4. She then fought back and took the second set, 6-2, and the third, 6-4, to win the match. Molly Carlberg also won in a third set at No. 2 singles. After taking the first set, 6-3, Carlberg dropped the second set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-4), but answered with a 6-4 win in the third set.
The Chargers took the third set at No.1 singles for their second point. Siana MacDonald closed out the match with a long victory at No. 3 singles, winning in a third set tiebreaker. She took the first set, 6-1, before dropping the second set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-1). The third set went to a tiebreak as well and the freshman was able to close out the match, 7-6 (7-4).
The Wildcats close out the regular season with another tough regional matchup, hosting the District of Columbia on Tuesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center. The first serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
