PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team moved to 2-0 on the young season, defeating a shorthanded Chestnut Hill squad, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action.
The win is the 17th consecutive regular season conference win for the Wildcats, dating back to October 3, 2023, in a loss to Jefferson. It was the first loss of the season for the Griffins, as they are now 2-1 overall, 1-1 in CACC play.
The Griffins were only playing with five student-athletes, so the Wildcats only needed one of the final two doubles matches to take the point. Siana MacDonald and Liza Sylka took care of that, winning at No. 1 doubles, 6-1. The Griffins took the match at No. 2 doubles through, 6-1.
The forfeit at No. 6 singles moved the Wildcats to 2-0 in the match, and then Molly Carlberg brought the Wildcats to within a point of the team victory with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-0 and 6-1.
The Griffins got on the board at No. 5 singles, but then Ming-Fu Chen clinched the match for the Wildcats with a 6-1 and 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles. Elena Camacho kept the match rolling for the Wildcats with a 6-2 and 6-3 win at No. 1 singles and then Siana MacDonald fought back to win at No. 2 singles, 4-6 and 6-3, winning the third set super set, 10-8.
The Wildcats are on the road again this weekend, making their farthest trip this fall to Waterbury, Connecticut, to take on Post. The match is set for Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. start at the Edgewood Bath and Tennis Club.
