WILMINGTON, Del. - - The match needed to go into a second day, but the Wilmington University tennis team finished off in-state and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Goldey-Beacom, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon at The Independence School.
The Wildcats held a 3-1 advantage when the match was called for darkness on Monday, resuming on Tuesday afternoon to determine a winner. With the win, the Wildcats move to 6-1 overall and 6-1 in CACC play.
The Lightning (1-4, 1-4 CACC) took the double point from the Wildcats on Monday, winning at No. 1 and No. 2. Elena Camacho and Gloria Barcaro started doubles play with a win at No. 3, 6-1, but the Wildcats couldn't close out the point.
The Wildcats took care of all six singles matches though, as Ines Oliveira started the scoring with a win at No. 6 singles, 6-0 and 6-1, on Monday. Molly Carlberg put the Wildcats in front with a win at No. 2 singles, 6-3 and 6-0, on Monday, and then Gloria Barcaro made it 3-1 to close out Monday with a. win at No. 5, 6-2 and 6-3.
The other three singles matches all went three sets, needing to be finishing on Tuesday afternoon. Siana MacDonald went to a tiebreak in two sets, but came out on top at No. 1 singles. She won the first set, 7-5, but lost in the second, 7-6 (7-3), to go to a third. She then battled for a 7-6 win, winning in the tiebreak, 7-5.
Ming-Fu Chen won the first set as well for the Wildcats at No. 3 singles, but also needed a third set to win. She won the opener, 6-4, before falling, 7-6 (7-2), in the second. She rallied with a 6-4 win third set to take the match.
Elena Camacho battled from behind at No. 4 singles after dropping the first set, 7-6 (7-5). She forced a third set with a 7-5 win in set two and then took the match with a 6-3 win in the third set.
The Wildcats get right back into action on Wednesday afternoon with another CACC contest. They welcome Post to the Delcastle Tennis Center with the first serve set for 2:00 p.m.
