WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team wrapped up its fall regular season on Wednesday, defeating crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom, 6-1, at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (8-2, 8-2 CACC) now prepare for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament this weekend at the Delcastle Tennis Center. The Wildcats are vying for their fifth consecutive Tournament Championship and will go in as the No. 2 seed and play the second Semifinal on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats took the first two matches of the double competition, earning the point. Ines Oliveira and Siana MacDonald won at No. 3, 6-1, and then Ming-Fu Chen and Molly Carlberg won at No. 1, 6-3, to take the point. Wildcat tandem of Elena Camacho and Gloria Barcaro fought back and eventually took the match at No. 2 doubles as well, needing a tiebreak to complete the sweep, 7-6 (7-4).
A retirement at No. 2 gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead and then Molly Carlberg stayed red-hot with a double bagel at No. 3 singles, winning, 6-0 and 6-0, for the 3-0 lead. Elena Camacho clinched the team victory for the Wildcats at No. 6 singles, also winning by a double bagel, 6-0 and 6-0.
Ming-Fu Chen won her final regular season tune-up at No. 4 singles, 6-3 and 6-1, to make it 5-0 before Gloria Barcaro won at No. 5 singles, 6-0 and 6-1, to make it a 6-0 match. Goldey-Beacom was able to claim a point off the Wildcats on Court 1, as Camilla Franzin defeated Siana MacDonald, 6-4 and 7-6 (7-2).
The Wildcats are hosting the CACC Tournament at the Delcastle Tennis Center starting with the first semifinal match at 10:00 a.m. A champion will be crowned on Sunday afternoon.
