WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team gave itself a chance for its fifth consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship, defeating Goldey-Beacom, 4-0, in the semifinal round on Saturday at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
With the win, the Wildcats will now play Jefferson in the CACC Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at the Delcastle Tennis Center. The Rams are the only team to defeat the Wildcats this year, as they now stand at 9-2 on the season. Both matches between Wilmington and Jefferson were 4-3 contests during the regular season.
On Saturday, Goldey-Beacom forced the doubles competition to go the distance. Siana MacDonald and Ines Oliveira were the first to finish on Court 2, winning, 6-3, but then the Lightning won at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, to put all eyes on Court 3. Gloria Barcaro and Elena Camacho closed out the contest with the final two games, winning, 6-4, to claim the doubles point.
The Wildcats didn't let the Lightning hang around for long once the singles matches started. Ming-Fu Chen gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 4 singles, 6-0 and 6-1. Elena Camacho followed close behind at No. 6 singles, 6-1 and 6-1, and then Molly Carlberg clinched the team victory with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-2 and 6-0, to win the match, 4-0.
Top seeded Jefferson defeated fourth seeded Chestnut Hill, 4-0, in Saturday's first semifinal. It'll be the fourth time in the last five seasons the Wildcats and Rams will face off for a CACC Tournament Championship.
