WEST CHESTER, Pa. - - Despite dropping its doubles point on Thursday, the Wilmington University women's tennis team battled back with a 5-2 victory over West Chester to begin its 2026 spring schedule.
The Wildcats got off to a hot start with their 2026 schedule and now stand at 11-2 overall.
After the Wildcats won the first doubles match, West Chester was able to take the final two matches to earn the point. Ine Oliveira and Liza Sylka gave the Wildcats a jump with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but then the Golden Rams won at No. 2, 6-3, and then took the point with a win at No. 1 doubles, 6-4.
The match went to singles competition, and the Wildcats quickly turned the tide. Gloria Barcaro got the Wildcats on the board with a 6-1 and 6-2 win at No. 6 singles and then Liza Sylka gave the Wildcats the lead with a win at No. 5 singles, 6-2 and 6-0. Molly Carlberg kept the momentum going by winning at No. 3 singles, 6-2 and 6-0, giving the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.
West Chester stayed in the match with a win at No. 1 singles, but then Ming-Fu Chen secured the team victory for the Wildcats with a third set victory at No. 5 singles. Chen won the first set, but West Chester forced a third set. Chen was able to put the match away with a 6-0 win in the third set.
Elena Camacho was in the same situation at No. 2 singles, winning the first set but dropping the second set. Camacho was then able to secure the victory with a 6-4 win in the third set.
The Wildcats open their spring home slate with their next match, hosting NCAA Division I and in-state rival Delaware State on Tuesday. The match at the Delcastle Tennis Center is slated for a 2:00 p.m. first serve.
