FLUSHING, N.Y. - - After squeaking by in doubles, the No. 4 Wilmington University women's tennis team put the pedal down in singles to defeat No. 5 Assumption, 4-0, in the First Round of the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament on Friday afternoon on the campus of Queens College.
With the win, the Wildcats (16-4) move on to take on the host and top-seed Knights on Saturday night in the Round of 32. The winner of Saturday night's contest advances to the NCAA DII National Tournament Round of 16 in Surprise, Arizona.
Assumption took the match at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, but Ines Oliveira and Siana MacDonald were able to even the match with a win at No. 3 doubles, 6-4. Gloria Barcaro and Liza Sylka battled to a 7-6 victory at No. 2 doubles, earning the team point and the 1-0 lead.
All six Wildcats then won their opening set of singles competition. Siana MacDonald made it 2-0 with a win at No.1 singles, 6-1 and 6-2, and then Molly Carlberg put the Wildcats ahead, 3-0, with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-1 and 6-2.
Elena Camacho closed out the victory at No. 2 singles, winning, 6-4 and 6-3, ending play on the other courts as the Wildcats won, 4-0.
Liza Sylka was leading on court 4, 6-2 and 6-5, while Ming-Fu Chen was also leading on court 5, 6-3 and 6-6. Gloria Barcaro was into the third set, but was still leading at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 3-6, and 3-1, when the match ended.
The Wildcats and Knights met at this point last year as well, with the Knights edging the Wildcats, 4-3. Saturday's match is set for a 6:00 p.m. start inside the QC Tennis Bubble.
