LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The Wilmington University cross country teams traveled to Kentucky to compete in the jam-packed Louisville Classic on Saturday with the men placing 25th in the 8K Blue race and the women finishing ninth in the 5K Silver race at the famed Tom Sawyer State Park.
The men were off first on Saturday, finishing 25th out of 41 teams that ran in the Blue race. The women then stepped to the line in the 5K Silver race and placed ninth out of 23 teams.
Julian Jones again led the men on the course, placing eighth overall out of 417 finishers in the second of three tiers at the Louisville Classic. He ran the 8K in 25:18.6 to place inside the Top 10. St. Bonaventure's Clay Peets won the meet with a time of 24:12.2.
Carter Sparwasser was the second Wildcat to cross, placing 97th overall with a time of 26:24.2. Skyler Pearson came in 131st overall with a time of 26:42.0 while Reggie Hernandez came in 235th overall with a time of 27:35. 4. Cooper Schmidt finished 280th overall with a time of 28:06.8 while Julian Rich placed 314th overall with a time of 28:40.4 and Kevin Gonzalez came in 397th overall with a time of 31:11.1.
The Wildcats earned 277 points overall to finish 25th. Otterbein won the 8K Blue event with a team score of 153, narrowly defeating Mount Union who had 155 points.
The women then competed in the 5K Silver race and earned 294 points to finish ninth overall. Austin Peay picked up 63 points to win the race, followed closely by Mercyhurst's 70 points in second place.
Sammy Banning led the Wildcats with a 32nd place finish, running the 5K in 20:25.1. Tiffany Banning was the second Wildcat to cross in 50th place overall, crossing the line in 20:47.4. Amy Chomo finished 74th overall with a time of 21:15.6 while Maddie Minnick placed 94th overall with a time of 21:56.1. Angie Chomo was the fifth Wildcat to finish with a time of 22:31.0 to place 117th overall while Claudia Rodriguez rounded out the Wildcats on the course with a time of 24:30.8 to come in 162nd overall.
Glenville State's Natalie Barr won the 5K Silver event with a time of 18:23.7.
Saturday was the final regular season meet for the Wildcats as they now put all their focus on the CACC Championships scheduled on Sunday, October 26. The Championships will again be run on Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia, with the women starting things off at 9:00 a.m.
