NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference has announced the 2015-16 Men's Basketball All-Conference teams and junior guard Tyaire Ponzo-Meek has been voted First Team All-CACC by the league's 14 head coaches.
Ponzo-Meek (Wilmington, Del./Howard) becomes the first Wildcat to earn First Team honors since Corye Payton during the 2011-12 season. Ponzo-Meek is also the first Wildcat to earn any All-Conference recognition since Brandon Fox was named Honorable Mention during the 2012-13 season.
The junior guard led the entire East Region in scoring this season, pouring in 23.6 points per game. Bentley's Tyler McFarland is second in the region in averaging 22.7 points per game on the year. Ponzo-Meek is also second in the CACC with 57 steals, third with 107 assists, ninth overall with 207 rebounds (fifth with 159 defensive rebounds, and 10th overall in grabbing 7.4 rebounds per game). He averaged 39.2 minutes per game against CACC opponents, ranking second in the league.
Ponzo-Meek scored in double figures in all 28 games, including 20 or more points in 21 games. He topped 30 or more points six times this season, including a career high 37 points at West Chester on New Years Eve. Ponzo-Meek scored back-to-back 30 point games twice this season, adding a 34 point performance against Bloomfield on January 6 and then 30 points and 36 points against Georgian Court and Concordia, respectively. He was named the CACC Co-Player of the Week on January 4 following the games against West Chester and Bloomfield.
He collected five double-doubles on the year, including a career high 14 rebounds against Concordia on January 22. He also grabbed 12 rebounds at West Chester and against Georgian Court. Ponzo-Meek dished out a season high eight assists against Arkansas-Fort Smith on November 28.
Philadelphia's Peter Alexis was named the CACC Player of the Year while Concordia's Stephen Milhaven was voted as the CACC Rookie of the Year. Holy Family's Derrick Stewart earned the CACC Defensive Player of the Year while his coach, R.C. Kehoe, was named the CACC Coach of the Year. USciences took home the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award in a vote of the 14 institutions.
