NEWARK, Del. - - A first-half scoring barrage powered the Wilmington University men's lacrosse team to a 30-1 victory over Caldwell at the WU Athletics Complex on Wednesday in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup of the year for either team.
Wilmington gets back over .500 at 3-2, while Caldwell will continue to search for their first win of the year following an 0-2 start.
Wilmington's goal scoring was fast and furious in the opening 30 minutes, as they scored 10 times in the first quarter and 13 in the second. Andrew Dzubak got the party started four minutes in on a helper from Tyler Quinn, and it was all Wildcats from there. They scored 23 unanswered goals before Caldwell finally got on the board on a man-up goal with 22 seconds left in the first half.
The scoring slowed down in the second half, with only two goals in the third and five in the fourth, but the defense continued to play well. They killed three second-half Cougar man-advantage opportunities, and for the game picked up 59 ground balls and caused 14 turnovers.
The Wildcats had 15 different goal scorers in the contest, led by Kyle Parker's four, while Andrew Dzubak, Carter Barrie, Josh Lovely, and Cole Heinold each recorded a hat trick. Brian McGarvey and Connor Widmer each scooped up seven ground balls, and Aiden Vicidomini was right behind them with six. Cole Heinold recorded four ground balls to lead non-faceoff players.
The three faceoff men were stellar, combining to go 31-for-34. Vicidomini was a perfect 10-for-10, Widmer went 11-for-13, and McGarvey went 10-for-11. The 31 faceoffs won are a new single-game record for the Wildcats, beating out their performance in last year's game against Dominican by one.
Five different goalies spent time in net for Wilmington, with Daniel Flynn and Carter Trevisan each making a save.
The Wildcats will have a tougher test on Saturday when they head up to Pace University, who are currently ranked 14th in the nation. After falling, 9-8, to #17 Mercy and, 13-9, to #12 Molloy, Wilmington is still looking for its first win against a ranked opponent this year. The action in that one is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. in New York.
