PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Three goals in the final 8:16 saw the Wilmington University men's soccer team comeback and stun Holy Family, 4-3, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at Tiger Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wildcats (2-6-1, 2-2 CACC) tied the match in the 47th minute, but the Tigers (1-6-2, 0-3-1 CACC) answered with two goals of their own. The comeback started with 8:16 to play and then Theo Faillon scored back-to-back goals in the 87th and 89th minutes to shock the Tigers.
Despite being outshot, 11-2, in the first half, Holy Family opened the scoring with the only goal of the half in the 16th minute.
Alex Tarway curled one around the goalkeeper with his left foot from the right side of the box in the 48th minute to tie the game, 1-1. But then the Tigers answered right back, converting a PK in the 51st minute and scoring again in the 61st minute to open a 3-1 lead.
The Wildcats kept pressing, resulting in a 14-5 advantage in shots in the second half, but they wouldn't get back on the board until 8:16 to play. Demario McCarthy one-timed a cross from Diego Ramirez home at the back post, putting life into the Wildcats' comeback.
Continuing to hold possession and press forward, Theo Faillon tied the game with 3:37 left on the clock, making a run to the near post to finish off a cross from Jhamaleek Porter.
The Wildcats used a set piece to set up the game winner in the 89th minute. The initial replay got headed away, but Tsubasa Abe played the ball back into the box. Patrick Keys headed it down to an open Theo Faillon, as he scored again to complete the comeback.
The Wildcats oushot the Tigers, 25-7 for the match and held an 8-1 advantage in corners. Charlie Phillips made two saves for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats return home for their next contest, as they welcome Caldwell to the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon. The men complete the CACC doubleheader with a 2:30 p.m. start.
