NEWARK, Del. - - A sixth consecutive win to start the season is a new Wilmington University women's lacrosse program record, as the Wildcats defeated D'Youville, 22-7, on a snowy Thursday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The win moves the Wildcats to a perfect 6-0, surpassing the 2006 team that started the season with five straight wins. More milestones were surpassed in the game as well, as Alea Javorowsky became the 13th NCAA Division II student-athlete to surpass 200 career assists and Ella Royer became the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's all-time leading scorer, now with 309 career goals.
With big snowflakes falling at the start of the game, Ella Royer got Wilmington going, scoring the game's first three goals. It was her second of the game that gave her 304 for her career, surpassing Dominican's Grace DeStasio for the conference's all-time record. Anastasia Giannoulis made it 4-0 with her first goal of the game with 7:38 showing on the clock. D'Youville (1-3) countered with three of the next four goals, closing the gap to 5-3 at the end of the quarter.
The Wildcats scored 10 goals in the second quarter to pull away from the Saints. Kirra Crowley and Tristan Holdsworth scored to start the quarter before D'Youville made it a 7-4 game with a goal. Crowley then started a 4-0 run with her second of the game, with the final goal off the stick of Royer, from a pass from Alea Javorowsky for her 200th career assist. The Wildcats also ended the second quarter by scoring the final three goals, taking a 15-6 lead into the break.
The scoring slowed down in the third quarter, but it was all Wilmington as Royer and Leah Rycroft notched goals to make it 18-6 after three quarters.
Michaella Cook scored her second of the game to start the fourth as the Wildcats scored the first three to take a 21-6 lead. The Saints scored to stop the Wilmington run at nine consecutive goals, but it wasn't going to be enough. Eden Ward capped the scoring with her first goal of the season, settling the score, 22-7.
Ella Royer finished with seven goals and three assists while Alea Javorowsky a goal and added six assists. Tristan Holdsworth scored four goals and dished out five assists, while Leah Rycroft scored four goals to go with two assists, three draws, and two ground balls.
Caitlyn Welker led the defense with four ground balls while adding two caused turnovers, while both Mia Bucs and Eden Ward had three caused turnovers each. Allison Schiavone made seven saves in the first half to earn the win while Ashleigh Lawry slammed the door shut with three saves in the second half.
The Wildcats travel to Frostburg State on Monday afternoon for their next contest. The opening draw is set for 3:00 p.m. in Frostburg, Maryland.
